Record year for French wine, (and spirits) exports
Last Tuesday (7th Feb 2012) the Federation of Wine and Spirits Exporters said that France had set a record for its wine and spirits exports -- more than 10 billion euros in 2011, an annula increase of 10.5 percent.
Wine and spirits were the second-largest contributor to France's trade balance after the aerospace industry.
There was a 2.4 percent increase in volume, and a massive price increase of 10.5%.
When both are combined they produced the record export income.
A question has to be 'is this sustainable?' only next years figures will show.
If production decreases due to factors 'outside control', e.g. the weather, or if countries in recession (Greece, Italy, Spain) import less of a wine that is more expensive than their own. However this may be more than compensated for by countries with growing economies (like Germany) are happy to import a quality product, enhanced by a premium price tag (remember Stella Artois - Marketed to the English as 'reassuringly expensive'
It is probable that 2012 will see yet a further increase in the export value of French wines and spirits, as:-
'Cognac and Bordeaux wine demand in Asia is increasing', according to trade body FEVS.
Asian economies are booming and price is not a deciding factor, the wine to drink has to be 'French Wine', in a similar way that in Asia, the best Whisky is perceived to be 'Scotch Whisky'
